Sony Vegas is a good choice. There's also Adobe Premiere that's fairly easy to use.

I use VDubMod(video cut/filters/encode), Aegisub(text) and and old version of Goldwave(audio cutting/merging). :(

I use VirtualDubMod for compression and now Sony Vegas for visual effects, video editing, and add music/edit music etc. Once I started using Vegas, I couldn't stop, its an amazing program. I've tried others, but they suck in comparison to vegas.

I also use Audacity for audio editing, aside from what vegas offers.

I use Adobe Premier and Sony vegas. Sony vegas is easy to use but has less video editing features as compared to Premier since its meant to be a sound editing program in the first place. Adobe Premier may seem confusing at first because of its messed up interface but you'll get use to it.

Windows movie maker isn't that bad actually, and every computer should have it by default by now. The only thing I didn't like, was that after a while, mine kept saying to register with "Microsoft Plus!" if I want to use transitions/effects, and pay a fee. So basically you're stuck with the basics of video editing, with a few minor additions, if you use the "free" version that is. This was on Windows XP.

If you have Windows Vista, you shouldn't have this problem, as most "Plus!" stuff comes included in that version of movie maker. I can't say that for sure though, I never tried movie maker on my vista computer, since I got vegas now.
