View Full Version : Yu Yu Hakusho Live Action
I heard that a Dragonball live action movie was in the works and wondered if there are anymore animes about to have their souls drained by hollywood:
Live Adapation
20th Century Fox has announced, that the rights have been bought to a live action adaption to Yu Yu Hakusho as of early July 2008. Film is planned for a July 2010 release, and actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Megan Fox have been attached to play lead roles of Yusuke Urameshi and Botan.
(Source Wikipedia)
The person chosen to play as Yusuke Urameshi is also going to play as Tetsuo Shima in Akira and Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe. (both scheduled to release in 2009.. somehow). I want to know your opinion if you think this movie will be good or completely fail. While I believe dragonball will be a complete mess I feel that this anime might have better success as a live action movie.
It also seems this actor is coming out in alot of movies and I know too little to comment on him. Do you think he is a good pick to play as Yusuke? Or even any of the other characters he is playing in future (anime based) films? After seeing Megan Fox in transformers as a ditzyish & sexy/cute character I think she would do pretty well to play the role of the lovable reaper, Botan.
Plus if you heard of any other Anime/Cartoon based movies let me know! :)
I apologise if a thread like this has been brought up before (sometimes I can be blind) and hope this could bring about a friendly discussion. Since the post is also based on anime I figure its fits here instead of the generic movie section.

WAT
Yu Yu Hakusho is doable if they stick with the early arcs (I guess). As for the actor whose playing Yuske, at first glance I don't think he can pull it off. Yuske is supposed to be a tough, streetwise, fight loving bastard. Unless this guy is an amazing actor I don't see it.
Edit: I can see him as Tetsuo though he seems frail enough. Cobra commander? LOL

Yeah. 20th Century Fox bought it. No writer or director yet but rumor says Keanu Reeves apparently has the lead role (Spike Spiegel) under his name for like 8 months now.. Meh. =/
Dragonball (http://dbthemovie.com/cast/) - Emmy Rossum playing as Bulma is pretty. =]

Not really an anime but .. Street Fighter - The Legend of Chun-Li (http://streetfightermovie.net/?page_id=9) (Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li), Tekken, Akira (2009) and Ghost in a Shell.
Ah see I knew there was a thread to a similar discussion but I think I remembered it more to do with Dragonball so I wanted to be a bit more specific and talk about Yu Yu Hakusho. Probably because I just watched the whole series for the 2nd time lol.
I guess with the 'kungfu' (matrix etc) action movies Keanu has been in and because of his slim appearance I supposed someone thought he would fit. I just don't think he is able to perform the attitude the character has. Thank you for the links.

someone has to do something about this. keanu reaves is a fucking cancer on the acting community. he's unacceptable in any role, much less a badass like spike.

Oh. I was just saying there were more titles there. Haha. Too lazy to re-list so I just re-linked. =]

Exactly. That's how I feel. I love Cowboy Bebop so yeah kinda 'iffy to hear it going live action but then again I looked a bit and it seems the movie is a big budget film so at least I know they are willing to dish $$$ for it. Maybe enough to get better actors!? So just gotta wait and see if the live-action version will either help it or break it.
Right now, I'm just more than skeptical.. but it's still a rumor anyway, Keanu's role, that is! Hopefully, it stays a rumor .. but I heard it from the press lounge during Comic-Con (during the 20th Century Fox round table,) so it's kinda credible. Dammit! =/
i would say they should make Slam Dunk movie but i want to see Yu-Yu Hakushu too but Hanamichi Sakuragi > them or Hajime no Ippo movie
Why is goku gonna be white when everyone else is azn...?

Hmm. Cowboy Bebop live-action would have a better chance of not failing depending on the writers/director they get. But yea if they stick with the first few arcs in YuYu Hakusho it might work out.
And no one has signed on for Cowboy Bebop yet. Keanu Reaves is just a rumor. Which it better fucking stay as a rumor. No way that reject can play Spike.
The thing with YuYuHakusho is, you could do a story about his death and revival and becoming a spirit detective but then you gotta wonder what kind of case they will have and how they will present 'demons' and such. Also will they add Kurama, Hiei and other characters or will they keep it simple? It must suck to be a movie writer.
Cowboy Bebop you could do. Bounty hunter movie with a guy and his partner easy enough to make a story and you got the hot chick who seems to be both good & bad but mostly out for her own benefit (yeah kinda cliche). Then you got them looking for some quick cash by hunting someone and they run into an annoying kid who they realize is needed to catch someone (reminds me of indiana jones). The story is easy enough but again it always depends on what kind of activity they will do to make the movie seem full. That was the problem with, for example, Iron Man for me. They had a good character development but the action and everything else was very lame.
Why is goku gonna be white when everyone else is azn...?
Because it's an American movie. The main character being white is more appealing to the majority. Therefore it sells.
Why do you think they had to ruin Forbidden Kingdom, the first movie starring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li, by putting a noob white kid as one of the main characters?

Am I the only one who doesn't think it matters if Goku is white or not? He's, uh, not asian in DBZ. He's a fucking alien.
It's just that asians guys can pull off a radical spiky hair better than white guys.
Goku IS asian to the millions of DBZ fans out there. Even though he's really just alien.
It's proven, cause when an asian guy walks around the street with a spiky hairdo. He'd be called names like "super saiyan" or "goku".
This never happens if it's a white guy with spiky hair.
With that said, I don't care really, I'll still watch the movie for laughs and giggles. I will just never take it as a serious adaption.

I think it matters more that he probably knows JACK about martial arts. Kinda important. Even more than spikey hair.
About Bebop, they don't have to do any kind of origin stories about how the crew got together. Now whos gonna be Vicious? :stir:
All these anime movies will suck because no one in hollywood really cares about them. We'd need someone to champion them, that really cares about them, to do what Chris Nolan, Zack Snider (hopefully with watchmen) did for comics. Until then all we're gonna see are old stale action movie devices copy/pasted onto the anime world/characters.
