View Full Version : Ro priority problem

i tried asking for that in another topic but it didn't work so here's my problem:
with a core2duo laptop with 2go of ram and a go7600 i can hardly play with effects on. So i tried looking in windows xp task manager to check RO's priority and it was low. Whenever i set it to run on high priority it goes back to low right after. I tried with other programs that look like xp's task manager but nothin worked. Obvisouly it's my ro client itself that keeps switchin its priority back to low but i have no idea how to fix that. =/

The RO client always runs at low priority.

When you check task manager, is RO using 50% CPU all the time?

fenryl

yes its at 46 or something %

so if its not a priority problem why is it so hard for me to play with effects on with a laptop that 's 1 year old

What kind of video card again so I can look it up?

Also, moving this to the tech support forum.

So when you say you can hardly play, what exactly is it doing? What is slow?

Was it always like this? Has RO run properly on it before?

Maybe you have anti aliasing 16X and anisotropic filtering at 24x enabled with a resolution of 2600x1800, try to check those parameters ?

hmm just checked the settings .. was on direct 3D hall .. i set it to go 7600 now , i ll see if its better on wed's woe i guess.. else its on 1024x768x16, use light map (checked ) and enable fog (checked) and all details maxed. Guess i ll lower all that crap down to 0.

i couldnt find those options : anti aliasing 16X and anisotropic filtering at 24x .. maybe on the graphic card options.. i dont think i installed the control panel anyways :s

@Blueness : hardly play as in : rushing in a precasted emp room with effects on and around 200 people in the same room. as soon as i disable effects i can walk abit faster... but playing classes like scholar with no effects is kinda hard... or more like not possible unless i keep swithin effects on and off.

Yea I was talking about the video cards settings, those two have a HUGE impact on performance.

As for the RO settings you mentioned I could play flawlessly on a Pentium III with everything maxed, plus RO looks ugly without lightmap and fog.

Not quite related to topic but it always amazes me how can people have computer "lag" ( bad frame rate) when effects are on, even in woe... all I get is connexion lag from the RO servers and from my 220+ ping since I live in France. (and my computer really isn't top notch at all)

I've never had problems running RO and I've played it on a TNT2, GF2, Radeon 9800, and about 10 other cards. BUT my newest one is a x1950gt and I'm also having similar problems. I should run the game at a billion frames per second but sometimes the frame rate will take a hit when there's a lot of effects on screen.

I'd imagine this is starting to have something to do with top of the line video card + ancient direct X code...

When did this problem start? After a driver update perhaps?

Like Bastien said, I run a celeron 400 with those settings and it's mostly fine, they aren't the issue.

Full screen or windowed?

Idea, for most new video cards you can go into the advanced settings and make profiles and change options for different games, maybe we need to tweak it there?

^ That's what I suspect. These types of problems happen on newer cards with some really old games like System Shock and such. I'll check the official forums later and see if anyone else is having problems.

Uhh no It's not because it's new, I'm running a 7900 and it runs fine. It may just not like the go drivers he has. RO has shitty programming and there is nothing you really can do other than try different drivers, old and new also you can try droping the texture filtering. Try the filter options first.

Open up control panel and open Nvidia control panel select advanced options. Don't screw with anything else.
Click Manage 3d settings
Click the program settings tab
Click add and find ragexe.exe or sakexe.exe by browsing for it rag is for main servers sak is for sakray
find the settings i have in the picture and change it to what's in bold

It has nothing to do with his AA and AF settings, by default it's determined by the program.

That's all I can think of right now, if that doesn't work try updating your drivers.

I'm confused, you're showing how to adjust the settings then you say it has nothing to do with the settings. Also you shouldn't have to run RO with performance mip mapping on a 7900.

Learn to fucking read,

I run with defaults and it's fine. That's as far as I go I'm not going to help someone with others that have no idea what they are talking about.

Your reaction is unnecessary. I used to write up reviews for Ars Technica back in the day so I'd say I'm qualified. I'm also having similar problems which I feel further validates my input. I think Blue nailed it when she indicated a link between older DX calls on newer hardware which is common with PC Games. Your help is always appreciated, even if you were contradicted.

Also I was just thinking with the fill rate a 7600go is capable of adjusting the mip map settings shouldn't solve the problem. Even if it did it would be one of those treating the symptoms cases. I second your recommendation to try various driver revisions. Also I'm assuming the OP isn't using the originally installed graphics drivers as that is a no no.

No I did not contradict myself.

AF and AA are not the only filtering options. Please read carefully because it's making you look like you don't know anything.

New hardware and old DX programs is never an issue, seeing all DX versions are backward compatible with its predecessors. Hell I can play diablo 1, which is DX 3 or 5, on my system, no changes and all default. It's not DX it's the shitty programing.

If he's running microsoft's version of the drivers he's not even really running in hardware. This happened to me with my TNT2 and windows XP. I have no idea if they changed this in vista, seeing as I get the manufacturer's driver off the bat after that incident.

He should able to do it right out of the box. It's not directX, and it shouldn't be settings. We'll find out when he tries. So that would leave drivers which is most likely the case.

I need to know the model of the laptop as well.

I ll see if anything works tomorrow :)

Sho Lin: We're all trying to help each other here, there's no need to lash out and attack him because he misread you.

As far as the "new" thing, that's a better way to put it, newer cards and bad programming don't mix.

Sho Lin

He did it twice to me and he didn't want to listen.

I was pointing out it's RO not the video card. The only problem you have is when your card is an older DX than the game you are trying to play. My guess is there is no change and he needs new drivers.

It's still not reason to start getting pissy. Chill pill, you need one.

It's just simply conflicting when multiple people running with the same card are getting different results. When Fenryl tries it, we'll be able to see if your suggestion helped or if it is indeed something else. Keep calm.

Sho Lin

When you deal with people that don't want to listen day by day, you'll be in the same shoes.

If I could get the model of the laptop, I can find the video drivers.

^ Quit while you're ahead. I'm not interested in debating with you as your first post says all I need to know about your knowledge on the subject.

To OP I'd try a few different drivers from here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Sho Lin

No, you deliberately ignored me twice saying I contradicted myself. Which I never. No shit I'm going to get irritated. Working with other people that don't want to listen is the most pain in the ass thing to deal with.

From now on just read everyone's post throughly so there is no confusion in the future. Just admit misreading my post and get on with this.

oh well.. last woe was laggy as fuck... i could barely walk most of the time. That + the fact that in my graphic card settings, every time i try to go in advanced options my comp freezes. So yea basicly i ll get older drivers that let me do something and not just freeze and a lag-free woe... wich isnt gona happen any soon i think.

Sho Lin
10-11-2007, 08:39 PM
By older drivers do you mean you updated them before this freezing and lag happened? Also, for shits and giggles download a demo of some game not too intensive and see how it runs.

fenryl
10-12-2007, 12:52 PM
i could run bioshock on it but it was kinda slow.. hardly playable but still shows all the textures and all.. else i emulated dreamcast games on it a few months ago and it was running quite well.
about the drivers : yea i updated them during this summer but i wasnt playin RO at that time so i dunno if its related.

Sho Lin
10-12-2007, 01:21 PM
Bioshock is one of the most intensive games out now. Try something like battlefield II demo or something. Do you have restoration disks in case anything goes wrong?

fenryl
10-13-2007, 07:55 AM
nope... but i should really consider making one... /lazy x_x

ps : i live in a retarded country called belgium where most isps have traffic limits at like 10-15go ( getting unlimited traffic next year i hope) , so yea gotta wait for next month before i can DL that demo.
