Yeah, I tried clicking and unclicking the "Sharpen image" option but nothing changed. I have an HP Deskjet F4180 and I think the brigthness can be adjusted over here:

I don't want to waste ink by doing trial and errors though.

Define "too bright"?

Does the before and after picture adjust to what you're looking for?

You could use Paint to just print something like this a few times, not much wasted ink:
