Off Topic / Fire Emblem: Fates

NA release was yesterday.

I originally got Birthright for the girl-on-girl, but after playing the game a bit, I was so thoroughly disgusted by their weeby culture that I actually bought Conquest and am playing that instead. I mean, come on, they even give you a bunch of ninja wannabees and a little pink-haired sister named Sakura who is a healer shrine maiden, REALLY?!

The gameplay is okay, it looks prettier than Awakening, the castle thing is cool, and the plot is pretty horrible. It's a fun game and I'll probably beat it, but it seems like they've just taken every single bit of fan service from previous fire emblems and crammed it all into a single game without regard for anything. A lot of the characters are basically just alternate versions of the popular Awakening characters (Owain/Odin, Tharja/Shara, Donnel/Mozu, etc)

Enjoying it, but it's also probably in the lower half of my list of favorite Fire Emblems, and I really hope they reign things in and streamline it a bit in upcoming games.

Also Birthright is cancer. Chapter 10 is cancer too.

Released Nov. 25th in the U.S. for Nintendo 3DS only, they took Etrian Odyssey and reskinned it as Persona. You play as the characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 4 with a couple of new ones in new scenarios. Pretty good move with the series even if it's a re-using of older content with new story. The Etrian Odyssey game engine actually lends itself very well to the persona series, makes the dungeons more comfortable.

The graphics are nice enough for the 3DS, dungeons have a little more decoration than the norm for Persona games, it's a shame it wasn't released on the Vita though because it would probably look great on a system with better capabilities and the 3DS isn't quite up to par. The graphics look better than Pokemon X/Y but maybe not as good as those in Pokemon ORAS.

It's more expensive than most 3DS games, but if you're a fan of either Persona or Etrian Odyssey, you should definitely check it out imo.

There's like three threads for Origins, but nothing for this, released a little while back.

It's a little bland compared to origins, but pretty cool game.

Tech Help & RO Support / Coolermaster 212 on LG1155
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:26:25 PM »
Does all the metal bracketing the coolermaster 212 uses cause any or have the potential to cause any shorts on a micro board with a LG1155 socket (which also uses metal bracketing around the processor)?

Just having a hell of a time with this, it all boots normally with the stock cooler, but the stock cooler lets it get too hot, but it will not boot with the coolermaster on there. It is a smaller board so I'm trying to make sure the sink itself isn't touchingn anything, but am suspicious of the bracket across the back.

nevermind, i'm just a huge fucking idiot and shorted the board on my own

Just wanted to throw out there that was recently released. Maybe not worth getting for vita, but probably worth it for the 3DS (it's in the e-shop)

Basically it's Persona's retarded little brother.

The game is split between dungeon crawling (If persona's dungeons were a 7/10 in difficulty, these are maybe a 2/10 in difficulty) and hitting on the 8 girls (there's no time restrictions though as far as i can tell).

You use the girls to make babies, and control three teams of babies and one team of you + waifu in combat (as opposed to four real characters).

The criticisms of the game (shallow, too easy, very superficial) are all definitely true, but it's a pretty solid addition RPG-wise to the 3DS (assuming you've already beaten ESO IV, ESO I, FE, and the SMT/DS games)

Definitely a fun little time sink if you liked the persona games and don't mind a more lighthearted easier knockoff.

Off Topic / people older than 24 are too old to play starcraft II
« on: April 20, 2014, 04:15:22 AM »
If you're older than 24 you should stop playing video games because you get bad at them.

Your brain might be slowing down a bit sooner than you think. A new study suggests some people's cognitive motor skills begins to slowly diminish after the age of 24.

Cognitive motor skills are a human's ability to process thoughts then react to them. This new study finds that reaction time might decrease, not at 60, 50 or even 40. Try in your 20s.

The study was put together by three Canadian researchers from Simon Fraser University. They found cognitive motor skills peaked at the age of 24, not after retirement.

In order to figure this out, the researchers gathered data from a group of more than 3,000 players of the fast-moving computer war game Starcraft 2, from ages 16 to 42, during game play.

The researchers looked at the gamers' performance data to determine how quickly they responded to different scenarios. The study revealed that players had decreased or slow-down in a measure of cognitive speed that is known to be important for performance beginning around the age of 24.

Off Topic / Turn-based strategy games?

Been playing Civ 5 a lot, but starting to get unhappy with the difficulty of domination victory in contrast to other types of victory as the number of players and map size increases. I want large scale battles instead of people always bitching out with diplo/science victories. (Also it lags like shit when the turns get high enough)

Looked at Total War series but a lot of them look really old and most of the new ones seem to have terrible reviews, so not sure about that. Was reading a bit about Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, but reviews are really mixed too, and they made Sins of a Solar Empire which I thought was kind of bad.

Any good turn based (not RT) strategy out there with a more military bent?

Now, app developers with games on the market that include the word in the title are reportedly receiving emails from Apple asking them to remove their apps from the App Store.

The trademark includes games and software, educational services, and, oddly enough, clothing.

Gaming blog Gamezebo says that King Limited is indeed asking other developers to remove their games.

Ravers beware

also, who will end up trademarking the idea of a video game and suing everyone else
