Irowiki Homepage and Navigation Bar Update
« on: November 03, 2013, 03:13:20 AM »
I think it's about time the irowiki homepage (main page) and navigational bar on the left is updated. Both are locked from what I can tell and a regular user does not have access to update them.

The sidebar is accessed here --> http://irowiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Sidebar

My point of view is that for a new player, it is better to have fewer  links in there, and only offer the most important information. For  older players, that's also better because they can access just the most  commonly used pages from there. By putting less used pages as links from within the more common pages, the wiki can be much better structured.

Here are some initial general suggestions I had:

 1) Within "Basics", most are okay, but "F2p", "PK Servers" are  probably very rarely accessed should probably just be a page linked from  within some other page like "servers".

 2) Within "Minigames", I heard that Al de Baran Turbo Track and Izlude Arena don't even exist anymore.

 3) Some categories have page that really should not be listed within  the homepage at all, like "Poring War", "Mail", "Cooking". No offense to  the people who love Poring War! Whereas some very commonly used newer items aren't even listed at all, like Mora and Malangdo enchants.

 4) I would change the ordering of the categories a bit, listing the more important ones at the top.

There are a lot of changes I would like to make to this, if I had access  to it. I've made a lot of changes to irowiki recently (my name on there  is maromi333)

I also do want to make some structural changes, like creating a general "Enchants" / "Enchantment" page, which details what Fighting Spirit / Spell enchants are, and then links to the mora / malangdo / FAW etc. pages. Also I want to make a general "Equipment" page too. I can work on these when I have time.

I've updated the test version of the main page to reflect the current one here: http://irowiki.org/wiki/Main_Page/Test

Modify it how you want, and I'll port it over possibly with some modification.

Thanks, I made some changes for now. I still want to make some more changes but I'll have to create some new pages / categories / etc. before I can do that; I'll work on that when I have itme.

Oh wow, you had updated it already. I was still debating on anything else to change and wanted feedback from friends and so on, but I can't think of much else to change at the moment.

How about updating the navigation bar to be consistent with the homepage "table of conents"? Though there doesn't seem to be any way to "preview" it, only to see it live.

If you want to make a test sidebar page and post up your version of it, I'll do the same thing as before.

I would definitely like to do that. I wouldn't be able to preview it but I can double check to see if all the things are typed properly.

I'm just kind of at a loss on how to approach it. The sidebar was never consistent with the homepage, as it had things like Homunculus and Base EXP Chart, which the homepage never did have. People accessing Homunculus could technically go to the Geneticist / Alchemist page first, or people accessing the base exp chart could technically go to the "Experience" page first.

I'm just not sure whether everything should be completely 100% synced between the two, or if the sidebar should be different?

It would be good if I could get feedback from friends or any other people on it so I can decide how to approach it, but either way, I'll figure something out about it.

Also, should the homepage and sidebar link to ragial? I know it is hosted by irowiki too and really is an invaluable resource.

Yeah, I know it's in the links page but I was wondering whether it should be a bit more prominent throughout the wiki.

I've been working on a general equipment page and have finished quite a bit. From that, I've updated the homepage (test version) again.

I asked a few friends and for the sidebar, I think the best solution would be to sync it with the homepage, but make it slightly more condensed.

One friend mentioned that the most-often used pages are most likely the third-class class pages (Rune Knight, Arch Bishop, etc.) and suggested putting this onto the sidebar. I'm not sure if this would be too long, and it wouldn't be synced with the homepage, so I still have to put some thought into this.
