Look what I found, a sampling of parents who do not deserve to be parents. Perhaps some Americans can shed some more light on this. Is it unique to Oregon or is this terrifyingly widespread? |

Theres a really good Frontline documentary on this. Its all about herd immunity. Normally these disease would spread like the common cold but with enough vaccines creating a barrier the disease never spreads (or even shows up in the first place). Get enough stupid people in one area and you have a problem.
Sad thing is that infants can catch whooping cough from others before their vaciniation age. So even if they will eventually get vacinated, there is a window they can still catch this disease from others. This is not widespread but it is becoming increasingly so. For one, some people belive that certain aspects of the vacination process causes autism (either that the multishots or the mercury in some of the vaccines). Second, most new parents have never seen these diseases first hand so they dont think its much of an issue (most of these are serious diseases, ie Polio). wide spread. in western europe, there are tons of outbreaks of measles cause of people not getting their kids of vaccinations.
in California, there was over 20,000 cases of pertussis/whooping cough last year, which is herp derp derp cause the tetanus shot has pertussis (DTaP, diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis) in it usually too, unless you specifically have bad side effects from pertussis (DT). I'm in Reno currently which is largely a bay area migration zone. we generally get whatever they get at some point after their outbreaks start. flu, colds, you name it. and now we are also getting the whooping cough outbreaks. it's so bad that walgreens in the bay area will have marquees outside saying you can get your DTaP there (ps it's boosted every 10 yrs and it's the shot that makes your arm sore like a mother for 3 days or so)

I'm sure all those people crossing the border are up to date on their shots, right?

things of interest too: countries with higher rates of yellow fever will immunize a good portion of their population--in the US and many first-world nations, this is a hard and expensive immunization to have. a lot of SE/E asian countries are immunizing people against Japanese Encephalitis. again, a very hard and very expensive shot series to get elsewhere ($250-300 a shot, 2 series). costs of these immunizations highly outweighs the effects of the diseases and the subsequent costs, especially Japanese Encephalitis as it only kills about 30% of the people who develop it, but more than half of the survivors will have significant neurological damage.
